Technical Report on the Project for the Conservation of the Hyacinthine Macaw in the Brazilian Pantanal

Responsible for the project: Neiva Maria Robaldo Guedes

Period covered: 21. June to 31 December 1995

Summary: This is the final technical report on the project for the period above with the main results analysed to date. Of the 178 identified nest sites on 16 ranches in the Nhecolandia, Abobral and Miranda areas of the Pantanal we monitored 152 in 1995, of which 89 were used by Hyacinthine Macaws. New artificial nest boxes were installed and natural nest sites were repaired. Of the 42 pairs that laid eggs in I994, 30 produced young, in 1995 51 pairs produced eggs, but only 34 pairs produced young. During the last two years 35 and 34 young fledged respectively, and were weighed, measured and rung. Blood samples were taken from most of the young for DNA analysis and to have their haematological and biochemical values assessed. Five young were radio-tracked in 1995. One disappeared during the first weeks and the others were monitored monthly, three of whom remained with their parents. Some results have already been published and received well by the scientific community. More than 17 people were trained in field activities during the last two years. Environmental education activities, with personal presentations and informative radio broadcasts created considerable interest among the local population. The project work will continue.
