Responsible for the project: Neiva Maria Robaldo Guedes
Period covered: 1st January 1996 to 30th April 1997
Summary: This is the final technical report on the project for the period above with some of the main results analysed to date. Of the 193 identified nest sites on 21 ranches in the Nhecolandia, Abobral, Miranda and Nabileque areas of the Pantanal, we monitored 160 nests in 1996,of which 96 were used by Hyacinthine Macaws. Damaged natural nests were repaired successfully. In these three young of the Hyacinthine Macaw and four of the Green-winged macaw (Ara chloroptera) fledged. One young Hyacinthine Macaw hatched and fledged in one of the artificial nestboxes built and mounted by a group of German aviculturists.
In 1996 altogether 55 pairs laid 95 eggs. Nineteen nests failed, mainly because of predation. Of 55 young produced by the remaining 36 pairs, 37 fledged. Most of the young were weighed, measured, rung and had blood samples taken for DNA analysis.
A survey of the density of young manduvi trees was carried out in areas of different land use. Planned biotelemetric studies were not conducted because the radio collars for this purpose did not arrive until after the young had left the nests. Eight persons were trained in fieldwork techniques in 1996. Educational environmental activities with presentations and radio broadcasts were continued and have produced appreciable results in the positive involvement of the local people.
