Most early depictions of the Hyacinthine Macaw were made by the naturalists or ornithologists themselves and were therefore not masterpieces. Although parrots and particularly the large macaws, were favourites with master painters from the 15th century onwards, either as subject matter or as part of the background, there are very few such depictions of the Hyacinthine Macaw. This remarkable trompe d'oeil painting of a glass case of birds is one of these exceptions. The Hyacinthine Macaw takes pride of place in the top half of the picture between an aracari and a cock of the rock. This painting is in the Louvre in Paris.
