ICMBio statement 11th March 2020

The Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio) issued a statement on 11th March 2020, a translation of which is below:

All 52 macaws arrived safely at the Breeding and Release Centre in Curaçá, Bahia

From the moment they arrived at the Centre the birds were admitted to quarantine, under the supervision of the authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) and the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA).

The Spix’s macaws were released in the aviary maintaining isolation from the external environment and other animals for a period of 21 days. Before travelling all the 52 Spix’s macaws were individually tested for all necessary diseases following Brazilian health protocol and the captivity programme and all birds were free of disease.

This group was carefully selected with the intention of forming a wild group with the greatest genetic diversity, representative of the global captive population.
