Successful breeding in the Pantanal in 2021-22 for Hyacinthine Macaws

The breeding season 2021-22 in the Pantanal for Hyacinthine macaws was successful despite the wild fires. 115 nestlings hatched from 211 eggs in the controlled nest-boxes, of which 83 left the nest boxes. The young birds were chipped and rung by the team. The macaws had lost a lot of their natural breeding holes in the wild fires in the previous two years. The now successful breeding season is the result of intensive efforts to re-establish nesting sites and provide artificial nesting locations.  In the first half of 2022 financial support by Zurich Zoo had supported the two teams working in the Cerrado-Pantanal region and provided a further team in the Caiman, the biggest Hyacinthine Macaw breeding area. The three teams watched over 234 nests, 32% natural and 68% artificial. The high number of artificial nesting locations was very positive for success. The provision of these nesting opportunities reduced disputes between and within the species as well as losses through predation and thereby increased the breeding success.
