Good news from Brazil about the Hyacinthine macaws in the Pantanal

I have just received the October 2023 issue of the Parrot Society UK magazine. It contained a short article by Rosemary Low about the Hyacinthine macaws in the Pantanal. In recent years fires have had a terrible impact, even burning chicks in their nests. The extent of the area burnt in the Brazilian Pantanal reached a record high in 2020, resulting in an environmental catastrophe.

However, on September 19th Neiva Guedes, President of the Instituto Arara Azul, reported to Rosemary "The macaws have started to breed and we now have 50 active nests, most of which are at the egg stage, with a few chicks having hatched in August." Neiva Guedes has achieved worldwide fame in the world of conservation with the successful project she started, which saved the Hyacinthine Macaw. On September 5th a cultural event was held in Brazil  to celebrate this success attended by some 200 people. Rosemary Low’s publication "Female Heroes of Bird Conservation"  in which Neiva features now appears in Portuguese. Neiva’s dedicated work in the Pantanal thoroughly deserves recognition.
