There is more good news from the Pantanal about the Spix’s macaws reintroduced to the wild. On 3rd March 2025 the following was posted. It was World Wildlife Day and there was much to celebrate relating to the Spix’s macaws. It was also the 5th year anniversary of the return of the Spix’s Macaws from Germany to their natural habitat in preparation for their release. The oldest chick in the wild nest fledged and flew outside the nest and it has a sibling to follow soon. The success of the Spix’s macaw breeding in the wild is becoming annual occurrence.
The 41 macaws which arrived in partnership with Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (GZRRC), an affiliate of Vantara, and ACTP, are doing well in quarantine. A third chick this year hatched at the beginning of February and did well. The rain returned and transformed the dry grey habitat into a lush green paradise.
Cromwell Purchase and his wife, Candice, are to be congratulated on their sterling work in the wilds of the Caatinga. Without them the successful re-introduction of the Spix’s Macaw into the wild would not be possible.
