Berlin Zoo involved in Hyacinthine Macaw project in Bolivia

Berlin Zoo has been involved in a project for the Hyacinthine Macaw in Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia since 2016. This is the most westerly part of the Hyacinthine Macaw range in the wild where there are believed to be some 300 macaws. The main goals are mapping the areas where the macaws occur; monitoring macaw numbers; taking stock of nest sites and possible nesting sites; helping local authorities in curbing the illegal trade; carrying out education work in local schools and promoting eco-tourism. It is similar, but on a much smaller scale, to the splendid work being undertaken by Neiva Guedes and her team in the Brazilian Panatanal. There is more information on the Berlin Zoo website.
