Lear's macaw situation
Lear's macaw situation
The problem with the German website pages has now been sorted. I've just got back from the American Federation of Aviculture annual convention, which was held this year in Tucson, Arizona. There were two presentations, which featured the Lear's Macaw. One was an update by Caroline Efstathion PhD, who is intensively involved with the Lear's Recovery Project. The other was from Rob Horsburg, an apiarist, who has worked on parrot conservation projects where bees are involved. He highlighted the increasing threat of the Africanised Honeybee to the Lear's Macaw population in the wild. The bees have started to nest in the cliff niches used by the macaws for their own nesting. Apart from the problem with the bees, the macaws are having to contend with local people climbing up the cliffs to collect honey. These people are placing wooden sticks into the cliff to use as a ladder.
I'm pleased to report that the corn replacement project will be commencing again this year. Last year (2016) saw a severe drought in Bahia and as a consequence the corn did not grow. This year the fields are green again with growing corn plants.
